A vehicle with no working key can usually be brought back into use on site, without towing it anywhere.

Situations this covers

  • The only key has been lost and nothing else exists
  • All keys lost — no spare in a drawer, nothing to copy
  • Keys stolen, with old keys needing to be removed from the vehicle
  • A key dropped somewhere on a walk or a shift and never found
  • A key left in clothing that has been through a wash and stopped working

Can a key be made with no original?

For a large share of vehicles on the road, yes. The blade can be cut from the key code held against the vehicle or by decoding one of its locks, and the new key is then paired electronically through the diagnostic port. What varies is how the manufacturer protects that process — some makes need security data retrieving first, and a small number genuinely have to go back through the franchised network. We check that against the registration before travelling.

Clearing keys that are no longer in your hands

If a key has been stolen, or lost somewhere it might be found alongside a note of the registration, the sensible step is deleting the missing keys from the vehicle's memory at the same time as the new one is added. That leaves only the keys you actually hold able to start the car. On most systems this is done as part of the same programming session.

What is done at the vehicle

  • Entry to the vehicle where it is locked
  • Lock decoding or key code retrieval
  • Blade cutting to the correct pattern
  • Transponder programming to the immobiliser
  • Remote or proximity functions paired
  • Testing on doors, boot and ignition

Details worth having ready

  • Registration number
  • Make, model and year
  • Current location of the vehicle
  • Whether any working key still remains
  • Whether the vehicle is locked or open

Around the Fareham area

Lost key calls come from all over — the residential streets around the town centre, Wallington and Funtley to the north, the lanes around Wickham, and along the shoreline at Hill Head and Stubbington, where keys have a habit of disappearing into shingle. Wherever the car is sat, it is the vehicle we come to.

Once the new key is working, it is worth thinking about a second key so the same afternoon is not repeated later.
