Why keys need programming at all

Since immobilisers became standard fitment, a car will only run when it recognises a signal from the key sat in or near the ignition. Copy the blade alone and the doors may open, but the engine will crank and die or refuse to fire. Programming introduces the new key's identity to the vehicle so the two agree with each other.

How it is carried out

Work runs through the vehicle's diagnostic socket using manufacturer-specific equipment. Depending on the make, the car may need a security handshake before it will accept changes, and some models hold a waiting period before new keys are written. Where the vehicle supports it, keys that are no longer in your possession can be removed from memory during the same session.

When programming alone is not enough

Occasionally the key is fine and something else is at fault — a failed reader coil around the ignition barrel, a flat key battery giving intermittent behaviour, or a damaged key body that has cracked the circuit board.
