Can a Spare Key Be Programmed From an Existing Key?
On most vehicles a spare is added through the diagnostic port with the existing key present, rather than cloned from it. Some older cars do allow an on-board procedure using two existing keys, and a number of vehicles cap how many keys can be held in memory.
Cloning versus programming
A cloned key copies the identity of the original, so the car sees one key rather than two. Programming registers a genuinely separate key, which means it can be deleted individually later. Where the choice exists, programming is generally the better option.
Do it before you need it
Once the last key is gone, the job becomes a lost-key job with everything that involves. Arranging the spare while everything still works avoids that entirely.
