Can a Damaged Car Key Be Repaired?
Often, yes. A new shell, a freshly cut blade and the original board and transponder transferred across will restore a key that has split, worn out or snapped. Water-damaged or crushed electronics are usually better replaced.
What gets replaced in a repair
- Outer casing and button pad
- Cut blade or flip mechanism
- Key battery
- Occasionally individual switches on the board
Snapped blade left in the lock
Do not try to lever it out. Extraction is straightforward with the right tools and expensive to fix if the barrel is damaged in the attempt.
